• November-Report cards were issued and the
school closed for Parent Teacher Conferences. The Radio Broadcast team made
its debut on WKMB 1070 AM. A new initiative entitled Project PACT was
created to target underperforming students. A parent workshop was offered to
provide specific strategies for students on Academic Probation to help
improve their progress. Grandparents were held in high esteem at
Grandparent’s Day festivities. Our
co-ed praise dance team, J-Rohi, performed for the first time on
Grandparent’s Day.
• December-Our first annual Holiday Bazaar fundraiser provided shopping and
entertainment experiences for our patrons. Second marking period Interim
Reports were issued. Our school-wide special Christmas celebration called
Gifts to the King was expanded to encompass presentations about Kwanza,
Hanukah, and Three Kings Day. The Turrell Fund notified NCCA that we would
be the recipients of another $40,000 grant.
• January-Report cards were issued. Parents and guardians were invited to a
first semester Awards Assembly. Awards were issued to Honor Roll students,
those students who made great gains in specific subjects, and individuals
who came off Academic Probation. The annual State of the School Address and
Parent Forum provided parents valuable information in key performance areas.
• February-Participated in the NAACP Langston Hughes Read-a-thon. Celebrated
School Spirit Week spotlighting the 1970’s. Featured in Courier News article
by Associate Editor Jay Jefferson Cooke. Third marking period Interim
Reports were issued.
• March-Held 4th Annual “All Rise for Education” fundraiser brunch at the
Pines Manor, featuring Baruti Kafele as Keynote Speaker. Teachers
participated in staff development activities.
• April-Hosted Honorable Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs’ Arbor Day
celebration. The City of Plainfield and Home Depot donated trees that were
planted by NCCA students.
• May-Celebrated Cinco de Mayo with special school-wide activities. NCCA’s
Parent Alliance hosted a Teacher Appreciation luncheon. The Turrell Fund was
honored at an Appreciation Banquet. Turrell Fund Chief Financial Officer,
Sonyia Woloshyn, cut the ribbon to NCCA’s new computer lab made possible by
the generosity of the Turrell Fund. NCCA instituted the Turrell Fund Award
to recognize exemplary scholarship, behavior, and community service; two
honorees had an opportunity to visit the Turrell Fund mansion to spend time
with Turrell Fund trustees. Fourth marking period Interim Reports were
issued.
• June-School-wide field trip on the Circle Line allowed students to see
many major NY landmarks. Students, staff, and parents enjoyed an all day
school outing at Cedar Brook Park. Held year-end Awards Ceremony and 2nd
annual Commencement Ceremony. Launched “Soar By Reading More” summer reading
contest.
• July-Mailed over 300 hundred letters on behalf of the Scholarship fund
drive. Hosted 3rd annual Gospel Concert fundraiser to benefit Scholarship
Fund.
2007 Alumni Achievements
- 2007 Valedictorian,
Jasmine Smith, was accepted
into the People to People Student Ambassador Program. Jasmine studied abroad in
Japan the Spring of 2008 and is returning for a second time this
summer. Jasmine greeted guests at NCCA’s 2nd Commencement Exercises
in Japanese. Her career goal is to be an Asian language translator.
- 2007 Salutatorian,
Queintard DeGeneste, II
received the NAACP Youth Leadership Award October 2007. Queintard
received a full scholarship to Westminster Choir College of Rider
University for High School Piano Camp for the 2008 summer season.
